Traditional excursion to Kastav...
Traditional excursion...
There are many reasons for excursions, and the most common is to go to a place where we have never been before. For a memorable day out, we recommend a trip to Kastav. This ancient hilltop town is located at an elevation of 365 metres above sea level, halfway between Opatija and Rijeka.
To help preserve local traditions and offer visitors the opportunity to experience the region's cultural identity, a series of museum collections dedicated to traditional handicrafts has been opened in Kastav.
The following local museums are open to visitors:
• Osojnak's Kettle Workshop – was opened in 2007 in a former
kettle workshop with the aim of presenting various tools and equipment,
as well as some items made of copper. Osojnak's Kettle Workshop is one
of the rare and most famous workshops of Milko Osojnak, the last kettle
maker from Kastav. The workshop was used to produce a wide range of
items of copper, such as boilers for making brandy, dishes for
agriculture, or various household items. The workshop has been preserved
in its original state with old bellows, fireplace and anvil, and a
collection of tools and artefacts that used to belong to the artisan
Milko Osojnak.
•
Viko's Coopery in Kastav – was opened
in 2003 in a former cooperage, which today includes a collection of
tools for producing barrels and a wide range of other items made of
wood.
• In
Idica's Bakery in Pelini visitors can see
how an ancient wood-fired oven looked like. The oven is hundred years
old and can still be used to bake bread. Local women used to bring
firewood in bundles from the nearby Loza forest. A baker would gain
recognition depending on the taste, appearance and the overall quality
of bread, and the tidiness of the bakery. People in Kastav still
remember Ida-Idica Bačić as an excellent cook and baker who used to bake
bread for many years in her bakery in Pelini. In memory of her and
other bakers from Kastav, this authentic place – Idica's Bakery – has
been preserved as one in the row of local ethnographic museums in
Kastav.
•
Kastav Museum Collection – this is a separate
collection of the Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Littoral
Rijeka, which was opened to the public in 1981 and re-opened after
renovation on 6 June 2005. It is located near the town gate (the vault
at the entrance to the old town of Kastav). This extensive collection
includes approximately seven hundred items of archaeological,
ethnographic, cultural and historical value, presenting the heritage of
the Kastav area from prehistory through to the mid-20th century.
