Autumn in Kvarner starts with the scent of roasted chestnuts in the air. The famous Marunada food festival traditionally takes place in October and celebrates sweet chestnuts, locally known as maruni (hence the name of the festival). The Marunada is an important food festival for the entire Opatija Riviera.
People from Lovran are particularly proud of their sweet chestnuts, which are regarded as one of the best varieties in Croatia. They are the result of crossing local varieties with ones from the Far East that Lovran's seafarers used to bring back from their travels around the world. Gathering chestnuts in the forests in the hinterland of Lovran is always a very special experience.
The Marunada sweet chestnut festival will be taking place for the 42nd time in Lovran. This October, you can enjoy specialities prepared with sweet chestnuts on three weekends in a row. The first weekend (10-11 October), the festival will be taking place in the nearby village of Liganj. On the second weekend (17-18 October), it is moving to Dobreć, while on the last weekend (from 23 to 25 October 2015) the Marunada will be taking place in Lovran.
Make the best of the October weekends, experience the colours and scents of sweet chestnuts, treat yourself to a holiday in Lovran, and enjoy the warm autumn days!
