The Opatija Riviera – a destination for gourmets

When it comes to gastronomy, the Opatija Riviera is one of Croatia's most renowned destinations. Here, you can sample a wide range of superb culinary specialities prepared with local ingredients. 

Asparagus dishes are typical at the beginning of the year, such as the famous fritaja (omelette), which is one of the most popular specialities of the Kvarner region in the springtime. Asparagus has always been considered a natural aphrodisiac. It is highly nutritious and rich in vitamins and minerals. 

After the spring and asparagus specialities, it is time for dishes prepared with Kvarner scampi. Kvarner scampi come from the Adriatic; they are always fresh and considered an incomparable gourmet delight. Scampi are prepared in various ways: grilled, in risottos, or in a buzara sauce.

The Kvarner region is also known for cherries, which are used to make cakes, pies and other sweets. You can pick or buy cherries in Lovran. The local variety is big in size, particularly juicy and full of flavour. If you visit the Opatija Riviera at the beginning of summer, make sure you visit the traditional Cherry Festival in Lovran.

Autumn is also the time for sweet chestnuts, which are celebrated in Lovran every year during the Marunada, a food festival typical of the Opatija Riviera.
